Summary

Social media platforms are an important party of daily life for many survivors, and can be crucial for helping them connect to their support system or advertise a business. However, taking control of how other people can find their accounts, connect with them, and managing the security settings for those accounts can help survivors use social media more safely.

Although account security features are not always developed with abusive behaviors in mind, the security guides developed by platforms can be a helpful place to start in heightening account security for survivors. Meta’s privacy center offers a starting place for beginning to manage these settings. Also consider guidance tailored for survivors such as CETA’s safety guides, dedicated chatbots, or contacting NRCC for technical assistance.
