Summary

An entire industry called data brokers involves companies that legally buy our personal information, such as names, addresses, and contact informations, and posts them online for other people to buy and sell. However, everyone has the right to request that data brokers remove their information from online search results.

This  community – maintained guide has detailed instructions on how to do that, and may be useful for survivors of stalking and abuse who are concerned about their personal information appearing online. While there are many data brokers, the guide highlights the most impactful 10-20 to start with.

Note that paid services exist (Kanary, Optery, DeleteMe) that will take down information from data brokers on your behalf for a fee; we link to a free resource as a starting place.
